Every year around the middle of August, the same question starts showing up: when can we actually go? It's a fair thing to wonder — pumpkin season is short, the good weekends fill up fast, and nobody wants to drive an hour with three kids in the back only to find a locked gate and a field of green pumpkins.

Here's how the season actually works for pumpkin patches in Ontario, when the sweet spot falls in 2026, and how to plan a visit that doesn't end in disappointment.

When does pumpkin season start in Ontario?

Pumpkins need a long growing season — roughly 90 to 120 days from planting — which is why Ontario farms plant in late spring and harvest through September and October. The pumpkins are usually ready well before farms open the patch to the public; what most farms wait for is the whole fall experience to be ready at once: the corn maze cut, the wagon routes set, the decorations up, the staff hired.

That's why opening dates cluster the way they do:

When does Clovermead's Pumpkin Festival start in 2026?

Our Pumpkin Festival runs from September 19 through October 31, 2026, and unlike a lot of Ontario farms, we're open Monday through Saturday — not weekends only. That's worth knowing if you'd rather visit the patch without the Saturday crowd.

Fall dates shift a little every year based on the harvest and the weather, and farm websites don't always get updated the moment plans change. Before you drive anywhere — here or elsewhere — it's worth a quick check of the farm's own hours page that week.

What's the best time to visit a pumpkin patch or corn maze?

For the best pumpkin selection

Go early — late September or the first week of October. Farms restock the patch through the season, but the biggest, roundest, most photogenic pumpkins get picked over first. If you have a specific look in mind for carving, don't leave it to the last week.

For the best weather and fall colour

The first two weekends of October are usually the peak in Southwestern Ontario — crisp air, real fall colour, and it's not cold enough yet that anyone's complaining. It's also the busiest stretch of the season, so arrive early in the day.

For the smallest crowds

Weekdays, without question. If your kids aren't in school yet, or you can swing a PA day or a day off, a Tuesday in October at a farm is a completely different experience from a Saturday. Shorter lines, easier photos, more room to actually wander.

For toddlers

Mid-September through early October, on a weekday, in the morning. Warmer weather, fewer people, and you're home in time for a nap. Skip the last week of October if small kids are involved — the mud and cold aren't worth it.

Pumpkin patches near London, Ontario and Elgin County

Timing shifts a little depending on where in the province you are. Southwestern Ontario — London, St. Thomas, Aylmer, Woodstock, Tillsonburg and the surrounding countryside — usually runs a week or so ahead of cottage country, because the growing season starts earlier and the first frost arrives later. Farms in this region tend to open in the second or third week of September and stay open right through Halloween.

If you're looking for a pumpkin patch near London specifically, most of the real farm operations sit outside the city — 20 to 40 minutes out in Elgin, Oxford or Middlesex county. That drive is the trade-off for an actual field instead of a parking-lot pumpkin display, and it's usually the difference between picking a pumpkin and buying one.

How to plan the trip so it actually goes well

• Check the farm's hours that week. Fall schedules differ from summer ones, and many farms are closed one or two days a week.
• Buy tickets online if the farm offers it. It's usually cheaper than the gate and saves you a line-up.
• Dress for mud. A pumpkin patch is a field. Boots beat sneakers every single time, and October in Ontario can go from t-shirt to toque in one afternoon.
• Go in the morning. Especially on weekends — parking, crowds and light are all better before noon.
• Bring a wagon if you have one, unless the farm provides them. Pumpkins get heavy fast, and so do tired four-year-olds.
• Ask how pumpkins are priced before you pick. Some farms charge by size, some by weight, some include one with admission.
